Watch the music video before reading the rest of this post.

How was that? Did you feel that something didn’t quite fit in the picture?

That is the music video for 海雪 (umiyuki, “Ocean Snow”) the first single by Jero (ジェロ), released last February in Japan. Jero is a young black American from Pittsburgh… who sings enka.

Enka is a form of Japanese popular music which was at its height in Japan during the postwar period. Its main themes are loss, loneliness, unfulfilled love, even suicide. Female singers of enka have been especially popular. I can’t help noticing some striking resemblances to Spanish copla; not only in the themes, but also in the staging, the perceived attitudes of the performers, their use of vibrato and the way both genres have gradually become regarded by their respective younger generations as “uncool” and affected.

For samples of enka, watch 修羅の花 (shura no hana, “Flower of Carnage”), the beautiful theme song for 修羅雪姫 (shurayukihime, “Lady Snowblood”) sung by Meiko Kaji and later reused by Tarantino in “Kill Bill”; or listen to 川の流れのように (kawa no nagare no yôni, “Like the Currents of the River”) by Hibari Misora, which at some point was proclaimed “the greatest Japanese song of all time” (?).

As Jerome C. White himself explains in an interview with CNN International, his maternal grandmother was a native of Yokohama who married an African American. Jerome was born and grew up in Pennsylvania, close to his Japanese grandmother, listening and singing enka even before he could understand the lyrics. Apparently, his debut has been a great success in Japan, where black urban cultures from the United States have been trendy for some years now (as one can gather by the surprisingly large number of shops selling hip-hop-related products in cities like Tokyo and Kyoto).

This form of strong cultural hybridisation is still rather unusual in Japan. Although we can find similar cases in other countries, where an “outsider” is “allowed” to succeed in an area that is traditionally perceived as idiosyncratic to that culture, Japan is (still) among the world’s most ethnically homogeneous countries. Of course, Jero is not the first performer of enka born outside Japan, but I don’t think that there has been any other gaijin before him who brought such distinctive traits of race, nationality, culture and language with him to the genre, all the while being supported by the industry and the media.

That said, I must confess that I can’t see the influence of rap in his music. Would you have been able to tell, had you listened to umiyuki with your eyes closed?

Holy cow. Right after posting the previous entry I learnt that Leonard Cohen was inducted into the “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame”… only five days ago. That is good news for three reasons: a) it’s good to check, from time to time, that L. Cohen is still alive; b) his appearance at the event proved that he is still brilliant with words and that the pitch of his voice has dropped down yet one more octave, entering the range of infrasounds; and c) there is still hope for a music industry that can spot an amazing lyricist among all the rubbish, and pay tribute to him even after so many years.

There are people whose soul vibrates in resonance at the same harmonics as Leonard Cohen’s. For all those people (of whom, if my reckoning is right, there are exactly zero among the handful of readers of this blog) let me link a few items about Leonard Cohen that are dear to me:

The event of his induction into the “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame” on March 10, 2008. Includes a short clip with words and images and an ardent introduction by Lou Reed. Cohen’s acceptance speech is short yet witty. After a few words of gratitude he recites part of the lyrics of “Tower of Song” and everything just works. Suddenly every single verse he wrote in 1988 becomes unexpectedly meaningful.

Damien Rice performing “Hallelujah” at the same event. Even if it’s not one of my favourite songs and its title always put me a bit off, I think this is a really good cover. But I still prefer…

…this other cover of “Hallelujah” performed live on TV by four Norwegian singers. I love Kurt Nilsen’s voice (at 2:05).

“Famous Blue Raincoat”, one of my favourite songs. Write a letter for the man who stole your woman — she is back with you again, but you know that he gave her something that you could not. Lyrics. Full song (kudos to Last.fm).

“Everybody Knows”, another great tune. Lyrics. Full song.

I will never stop being surprised by this digital world. How can you be exploring it many hours every week for years, and still find so much unexpected beauty, creativity, misery, shit, information and disinformation, all in new formats, all tangled and evolving, threatening and blossoming in real time?

Some parts of what follows may be wrong, I really don’t know. (And that’s the spirit of the web, too).

Today by sheer chance I found Mia Rose, a teenager from Wimbledon who posted on YouTube some videos of herself singing covers, and also a few songs by her own. She is very talented (far more than those dummies from X Factor and alike) and gained an impressive base of fans in a short time.

It happened that some executives of some big record label in the USA noticed that, too. And they wanted to talk to her, who is just a girl from London with an account in YouTube. So by the time you read these lines she may be signing her first contract with a major label, which is wonderful and disappointing at the same time.

I mean, being under 20 she has already arrived in weeks to where many other good musicians will never arrive, and that is thanks to that over-hyped, web -2.0, massive store of frames with null usability called YouTube. And that’s great.

But, on the other hand, she had already become known and recognised without the need for any of those greedy companies. Is she going to betray the spirit of the web? (Mia, this is mere rambling — go ahead and become rich. I really mean it).

People with true talent, people born with that “touch” within, they just need some good advice, a modest investment and a little bit of experience to achieve big things. That is Imogen Heap. Or Kevin Smith. Both are talented, very young professionals who (I believe) really enjoy doing what they do. Both sold or re-mortgaged their goods to fund their first works. None of them will enter Forbes’ elite, but that’s a false “elite” anyway. And they are honest. Yeah, honesty doesn’t quote on the stock exchange, but that’s beside the point.

The web simply leverages that old formula. Advice comes easy from the internet when you are giving something away and know how to ask for it. Initial investments become even lower for all those artists with the need for physical tools (sequencers, video editors, press) which may be replaced by computers. Experience… well, that you still need. That’s why it’s called “experience”. (Otherwise it would be called “Windows Vista” and nobody would need it).

This story goes on with some youtubers claiming that Mia Rose is a fake (sic) and some odd controversy about whether her visits and comments are real, and whether she’s “cheating”. Maybe people envious of her success. Maybe they are right. In any case I don’t understand why the discussion is about her position on YouTube’s ranking instead of her merit.

Now, the last piece of this story is the best one. Via Mike Abundo I learn that some visitor who Mia doesn’t even know decided to add drums to one of her songs. Then someone else took that mix and added a bass line. The result is a moving example of spontaneous, simple, altruistic, agile collaboration to create something beautiful… on the web.
