Blogging for twenty years

Last Saturday marked the twentieth anniversary of this blog.

In March 2006 I flew from Granada to London, and a few days later I settled in a room in a shared flat near Stockwell station.

Five months into my new English life I had a job, a decent salary that to me seemed great, and a few friends. By then, I had moved to what would be my home for the next three years (a better flat in Kennington). The summer of 2006 was unusually hot and dry: it didn't feel like England, and that helped me and my mood.

That summer, with my laptop heidi running Kubuntu 5.10, I finished the new web site I had created with Wordpress and uploaded it to OVH via FTP.

Weblogs had been “invented” nine years before, but only a few of my nerdiest friends and acquaintances had a blog back then — like Golan, who started blogging three years earlier than me.

And so, in 2006-08-29, I inaugurated http://tripu.info with a rather melancholic first post in Spanish (with the slug opening).

A year and a half later, I started using tripu.info for a general info page instead, moved the blog to the subdomain blog.tripu.info, and changed a bit the aspect of the site. I celebrated the redesign with a new cheesy post in Spanish (slug: re-opening).

For a few years I kept blogging, and I redesigned or moved the site once or twice. Its last incarnation, before I eventually lost the blog to a combination of neglect and technical issues, was as a wordpress.com-hosted site that I started in July 2014. In a nice alliteration, I resumed blogging around the time I was moving abroad again — this time, to Tokyo. On that occasion, however, I forgot about the mandatory cheesy post in Spanish.

Then, on the first day of 2022, after several years not owning a proper blog, an indie blog, I published this new version, which is a static site built with Docusaurus (in the interim, I had been posting on a couple walled gardens). I marked the occasion with an even cheesier post in Spanish… with the predictable slug re-re-opening.

And now, to “celebrate” this twentieth anniversary, I forced myself to find the time to move a bunch of old posts from one of those walled gardens to where they belong: here.

Between 2015 and 2021 I published 34 posts on Medium. After a bit of spelunking, they are all here now; find them with the tag from-Medium. This fills the biggest gap I had in the archive.

What were those Medium posts about?

The most popular I wrote was a long and thorough critique of the nationalist movement in Catalonia and of the methods of its leaders. Other posts that worked well with readers were: an explanation of why we shouldn't use “Chinese” as the name of a language, a defence of meal replacement powders and shakes (against the naturalistic fallacy), some notes after having read Ulysses, a collection of some quotes I love by David Pearce, or my highlights from the third volume of Michel de Montaigne's Essays (in Spanish).

As with everything I've written and shared, I am disappointed by a few pieces, even embarrassed by one or two, and still proud and satisfied with some of the others.

(Next, I intend to move here what I can find of what I posted on that short-lived wordpress.com site, and of what I posted on a Diaspora* node. But that's going to be harder.)
